Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship of Lafayette
Greetings fellow UUs and supporters!
We are meeting IN PERSON
and on Zoom until further notice.
Our theme for August is Activism.
“Activism is not limited to the grand
gestures or the large-scale movements;
it begins with the small acts of kindness
and compassion we show to one
another every day. It is about
recognizing that our individual actions,
when combined, can create a ripple
effect that can bring about real and
lasting change. Never underestimate the
power of your voice, your actions, and
your ability to inspire others.” Malala
Yousafzai
(Yousafzai rose to international prominence after
she was shot in the head as a teenager on her way
home from school in Pakistan in 2012 by the
Taliban, who targeted her for speaking out about the
importance of education for girls.)
Sunday, August 6th: Why You Should
NOT Be A Unitarian Universalist
Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter of First Unitarian
Church of Dallas discusses various
aspects of the church's history, theology,
and commitment to justice. He
encourages people to examine their
beliefs about the environment, race, and
gender. He warns about being limited by
religion. He proposes five reasons to not
be a Unitarian Universalist in a
humorous way.
Please visit us either in person at 1119
Johnston St. or on Zoom:
tinyurl.com/zoomuufol or via the link at
uulala.org. We now have Religious
Education for pre-teen children. We visit
with coffee and snacks from 10:30-11
am. The service runs from 11 am until
12 noon. After the service we will host a
potluck Barbeque lunch at church.
Everyone is invited!

(Last) Sunday, July 30th: Where The
Watermelons Grow
In this sermon, Rev. Loadman-Copeland
uses the classic children's song "Down
By the Bay" to reflect on how the
imaginative playfulness of summer
allows us to go deeper into life rather
than just faster. He explores symbols of
summer like watermelon and
distinguishes between finite games with
winners and losers versus infinite
games where the goal is simply to keep
playing joyfully. Loadman-Copeland
asserts that life should be lived as an
infinite game and that summer provides
a metaphorical playground to embrace
play as spiritual practice and
transcendence. He reflects on childhood
summers characterized by their depth
rather than just duration and calls on
adults to recapture the spirit of play. The
sermon's message is appreciating
summer as an opportunity for
imagination, transcendence, and depth
through playfulness.
