Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship of Lafayette
Greetings fellow UUs and supporters!
We are meeting IN PERSON
and on Zoom until further notice.
Our theme for June is Ritual
making meaning of experience.
“Rituals are those repeated actions
done again and again in the interest of
things like focus, grounding, tradition,
cultural symbolism, predictable life
rhythms, and feeling a part of
something.” Craig Kelley
Sunday, June 25th Ritual and
Ceremony Service
Lay chaplain Collette Dowhaniu of the
Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga
shares some of her learnings and
experiences from officiating various
ceremonies. She explains the
importance of ritual and symbolism in
human life, drawing from the insights of
Carl Jung and the sources of Unitarian
Universalism. She also describes the
basic elements of a ceremony, such as
a beginning, an end, and a symbolic
action. She concludes by inviting the
listeners to consider becoming lay
chaplains themselves.
Please visit us either in person at 1119
Johnston St. or on Zoom:
tinyurl.com/zoomuufol or via the link at
uulala.org. We now have Religious
Education for pre-teen children. We visit
with coffee and snacks from 10:30-11
am. The service runs from 11 am until
12 noon. After the service we will host a
Soul and African themed potluck
lunch. Everyone is invited!

Last Sunday’s Juneteenth Service
Rev. Erik Wikstrom of UUCville
confesses that he did not know about
Juneteenth, the day that commemorates
the end of slavery in the United States,
until recently. He reflects on how
American history has been dominated
by a White, Straight, Cisgender Male
perspective that marginalizes and
ignores the experiences and
contributions of other groups. He
criticizes the attitude of “been there,
done that, cross it off the list” that
pretends that racism and oppression
have been solved by past events. He
acknowledges that there is a river of
pain that runs through the nation’s
history and that still affects people today.
He urges White people to listen to the
stories and voices of Black people and
other marginalized groups and to join
them in the struggle for justice and
liberation.

Juneteenth Celebration Photos
President Lauren Dupuis, Chris Menard
and her husband Andy, and Scott
Ferguson attended the Juneteenth
event hosted by Move the Mindset last
Monday. We were very impressed with
the presentation by Judi Daniels of
Women of Wisdom (WOW) who spoke
on the need for POC and their allies to
vote and to be included on local Boards
which make policies for our
communities. We would like to invite her
to be a guest speaker for a future
church service. More photos of the
event here:
