Juneteenth, the day that commemorates
the end of slavery in the United States,
until recently. He reflects on how
American history has been dominated
by a White, Straight, Cisgender Male
perspective that marginalizes and
ignores the experiences and
contributions of other groups. He
criticizes the attitude of “been there,
done that, cross it off the list” that
pretends that racism and oppression
have been solved by past events. He
acknowledges that there is a river of
pain that runs through the nation’s
history and that still affects people today.
He urges White people to listen to the
stories and voices of Black people and
other marginalized groups and to join
them in the struggle for justice and
liberation.
