Unitarian Universalist
Fellowship of Lafayette
Greetings fellow UUs and supporters!
We are meeting IN PERSON
and on Zoom until further notice.
Our theme for May is Reconciliation.
Reconciliation is a process of restoring
relationships between individuals or
groups who have been estranged or in
conflict with each other. It involves
acknowledging past wrongs and working
towards forgiveness and healing. In the
context of Unitarian Universalism,
reconciliation is often seen as a way to
promote social justice and address
issues of oppression and inequality.

Sunday May 14th Service: #MeToo
Mothers Day
Roberta Madden recalls her childhood
and adult experiences as a female both
bad and good. She cites jury
descrimination, sexual harassment, laws
that discriminate against women, and
prisons that punish women more
severely than men in some states. At
the time of this video, white women
earned 80 cents on the dollar (women of
color earned less) compared to men. On
the other hand, women are increasingly
pushing back against inequality policies
and some states have ratified the Equal
Rights Amendment. More women are
running for office. In 1989 she ran for
the Louisiana Legislature and got the
support of unions, although she lost the
election. She ends her presentation
encouraging mothers and daughters to
rise up and for men to use their male
privilege to support women for equality
and respect.

Last Sunday’s Service Recap
Bring a flower this Sunday for our
Flower Communion!
Our Flower Communion, or Flower
Ceremony is a celebration of our
commitment to each other where each
member brings a flower to the service to
be placed in a large vase during the
service. This act signifies that it is by
your own free will you joined with the
others in the congregation. The vase is
a symbol of the united church
fellowship. After the service, each
member takes a flower from the vase
other than the one they brought.
The significance of the Flower
Communion is as no two flowers are
alike, so no two people are alike, yet
each has a contribution to make.
Together, the different flowers make a
beautiful bouquet. Our common bouquet
would not be the same without the
unique addition of each individual flower,
and thus it is with our church community,
it would not be the same without each
and every one of us. Thus, this is a
statement of our community. By
exchanging flowers, we show our
willingness to walk together in our
Search for truth, disregarding all that
might divide us. Each person takes
home a flower brought by someone else
- thus symbolizing our shared
celebration in community. This
communion of sharing is essential to a
free people of a free religion.
