Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lafayette Greetings fellow UUs and supporters! We are meeting IN PERSON and on Zoom until further notice. Our theme for November is Remembrance. From Touchstones: "Memory allows us to reflect on experience and deepen meaning." It can protect us from repeating the same mistake twice, or recall with fondness the memories of a loved one. Remembrance allows us to move forward and reflect. Remembrances can uplift or depress our spirits, but I like the ability to recall joyful experiences the best! -- Scott Ferguson --- Sunday, November 20th Service: Family gatherings at Thanksgiving can be stressful. In this video sermon, Rev. Beth Dana of First Unitarian Church of Dallas brings humor to this opportunity to be grateful and calls for grace under stress. Everyone is invited! — Last Sunday's Service Recap: In this service's video sermon by Kiya Heartwood, we learn about two Unitarian Universalists who are important in our history. There were voter suppression policies and harassment by the KKK that made it very difficult for black voters to register to vote in the Alabama of 1965. MLK led a march over the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma which was violently met by police and broadcast on national television -- later to be called 'Bloody Sunday'. Dr. King sent for clergy and social justice people to come to Selma. Unitarian Universalist Minister James Reeb answered that call. On the way to a chapel where Dr. King was to speak, he was struck in the head by one of 4 Klansmen. He was transported to a hospital in Birmingham, and died two days later. Viola Liuzzo was a Unitarian Universalist activist and mother who saw the brutality of Bloody Sunday on TV and decided to go to Selma where she shuttled protesters. During one of these runs she was shot and killed by Klansmen in a passing vehicle. Viola's reputation was assaulted in a cover-up by the FBI to divert attention from an FBI informant in the vehicle. Newsletter Survey: The survey shows that the majority of members wish to continue receiving the link to the newsletter via email. I thought I would be able to use the info provided by the Google Form to know who preferred newsletter links sent to Phone texts and Facebook Messenger. But Google Forms did not link the preferences to the respondent’s name. So I will have to try another way later. Sorry about that. =0
