Greetings fellow UUs and supporters! We are meeting IN PERSON and on Zoom until further notice. Our theme for August is Paradox. --- Sunday, August 21st Service: While science is doing its best to figure out the what, where and why of our consciousness, the paradox is why do conscious beings choose or have to experience unconsciousness on a regular basis. And where does our consciousness go when we sleep and how do we know to bring it back intact. Scientists' explorations span the mystical to the physical to further understand this paradox. Presented by Diane Kirksey. --- Service slides Facebook Event Please visit us either in person at 1119 Johnston St. or on Zoom: tinyurl.com/zoomuulala or via the link at uulala.org. We visit with coffee and snacks from 10:30-11 am. The service runs from 11 am until 12 noon. After the service every second Sunday of the month we have a potluck dinner. On other Sundays we go out to eat at a local restaurant. Everyone is invited! --- Last Sunday's Service Recap: Amber Faul read the sermon 'The New Atheism' by Rev. Lynn Strauss which observes that "We need not think alike to love alike". may be spiritual or humanist, believe in a higher power or no higher power. But our seven principles unite us in a common bond. Rev. Strauss emphasizes the importance of humility which enables change and growth in our belief systems, otherwise we may tend to embrace religious fundamentalism, or human superiority. We go to church -- not to insure our place in the afterlife -- but for fellowship and personal growth 'with a little help from our friends'. Atheism has changed its focus from attacking theists and explaining their beliefs to living lives of depth without the need for the supernatural. Requests were made to share the sermon text which we have included below. Service outline Service slides Sermon text --- Potluck Dinner: We had a wonderful dinner and joyful fellowship after the service! Thanks to everyone who came, brought food, helped set up/clean up and visited!
--- Move The Mindset Soil Ceremony in Youngsville: Thanks to Mary Guirard for attending the memorial event. We loaned equipment including about 29 chairs which we understand were just enough to provide enough seating so it was a very good turnout for the last of three lynching memorials. MTM will be working on obtaining markers and a location to exhibit them as one of their upcoming projects. We wish them the best. We also thank Dr. Rick Swanson, Dr. Frank Crocco, and Ola Prejean for their leadership and tireless efforts to educate and inform our community of its complete history. --- Touchstones Journal for August
