Greetings fellow UUs and supporters! We are meeting IN PERSON and on Zoom until further notice. Our theme for May is Courage. The root of courage is corage, the Old French word for heart (as the seat of emotions). In Middle English, uses included bold corage meaning “brave heart.” As Aristotle said, “Courage is the first of human virtues because it makes all others possible.” Courage is essential to wield power non-violently in opposition to all that diminishes or negates life. Courage makes repair of the world possible. --- Sunday, May 15th Service: It's time for our yearly flower ceremony where we celebrate renewed life, and recognize the important role of the pollenators (especially bees) who are responsible for about half of our produce -- some of which are, sadly, endangered due to man's activities. So bring a flower and share where you got it and what it means to you. At the end of the service we will each take a different flower home with us from a shared vase. Thanks to everyone who will participate and to the Services Committee who are responsible for putting together such wonderful and informative services! --- Please visit us either in person at 1119 Johnston St. or on Zoom [tinyurl.com/zoomuulala or via the link at uulala.org]. We visit with coffee and snacks from 10:30-11 am. The service runs from 11 am until 12 noon. After the service we pick a restaurant for lunch and fellowship. Everyone is invited. Last Sunday's service recap: The idea that our religion is like a thin gruel -- watered down to please everyone -- and that our Seven Principles are either too much like a creed or so general as to be meaningless -- could not be further from the truth. Instead, Rev. Meg Barnhouse maintains that the Seven Principles are deeply demanding -- such as affirming and promoting the worth and dignity of even people who do unspeakably awful things, and valuing equally the opinions of those with whom we whole-heartedly disagree. She suggests that we start by practicing 'Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations' beginning in our homes and congregations to -- gradually -- 'move toward being in right relationship with ourselves, one another, and the planet.' --- View past Services slides (with links to sermon texts or videos when available) --- Pro Choice with Heart is hosting a nationwide event at state capitols including ours in Baton Rouge on Sunday, May 15th at 12 noon. We have members attending this rally in defense of abortion rights! Find out more at the FB Event post. We will meet at Bill Edwards' house on Friday at 6 pm for a potluck supper and to label items for the Saturday sale. We would appreciate help with sales Saturday morning and with transporting items to Goodwill Saturday afternoon. Thanks! Congratulations to our officers who were elected for another term! --- --- |
