Greetings fellow UUs and supporters! We are meeting IN PERSON and on Zoom until further notice. Our theme for May is Courage. The root of courage is corage, the Old French word for heart (as the seat of emotions). In Middle English, uses included bold corage meaning “brave heart.” As Aristotle said, “Courage is the first of human virtues because it makes all others possible.” Courage is essential to wield power non-violently in opposition to all that diminishes or negates life. Courage makes repair of the world possible. --- Sunday, May 8th Service: The idea that our religion is like a thin gruel -- watered down to please everyone -- and that our Seven Principles are either too much like a creed or so general as to be meaningless -- could not be further from the truth. Instead, Rev. Meg Barnhouse maintains that the Seven Principles are deeply demanding -- such as affirming and promoting the worth and dignity of even people who do unspeakably awful things, and valuing equally the opinions of those with whom we whole-heartedly disagree. She suggests that we start by practicing 'Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations' beginning in our homes and congregations to -- gradually -- 'move toward being in right relationship with ourselves, one another, and the planet.' Note that if you are not going to attend the Business Meeting on Sunday you may view the Yearly Treasurer's Report in the Service Slides link above. --- Last Sunday's service recap: In this sermon 'Learning the Principles by Heart', Leslie Becknel learns the Seven Unitarian Universalist Principles by heart in an effort to incorporate them into her daily life. But she then realizes that she feels no different until she begins actually applying the principles in concrete ways such that if a court were to try her for being a practicing Unitarian Universalist, she would be convicted! Applying the principles in our everyday lives is what is required of each of us to show that we 'practice what we preach.' View past Services slides (with links to sermon texts or videos when available) --- We will meet at Bill Edwards' house on Friday at 6 pm for a potluck supper and to label items for the Saturday sale. We would appreciate help with sales Saturday morning and with transporting items to Goodwill Saturday afternoon.
