Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Lafayette

Greetings fellow UUs and supporters!

Our theme for July is 'Journey' -- life is a meandering journey to discover ourself

suppressing the vote.JPG
The title of this Sunday, July 4th's sermon presented by Chris Menard is 'Suppressing the Vote' which is a condensed version of a panel discussion by Rev. Barber, Miss Laverne Berry and Dr. Alex Keyssar from Harvard.

Some take-aways from the sermon:
The history of our country is the history of struggle for the right to have a voice.
When you suppress the vote, you open up the possibility for people to get elected that will pass policies that hurt mostly poor whites.
The Poor People's Campaign maintains that dealing with systemic racism, ecological devastation, poverty, environmental justice and religious nationalism is required to change the narrative and challenge voter suppression.
It's not enough to vote every 4 years when harmful legislation is passed in the meantime.
Hope is work. It's one thing to hope that the future changes. It's another thing to do the work to make sure it does.
